SOYBEAN
Soybeans, which are an important source of protein and nutrients in feed production, can also be consumed as food and raw materials are used in the production of healthy products such as supplementary food, soy flour, soy oil and soy milk. Throughout history, the plant has been cultivated in East Asia, including China, Japan and Korea, and cultivated for thousands of years. Since the beginning of the 20th century, it has been produced and traded in the USA, Brazil and Argentina. Soybean's arrival in Turkey took place in the 1930s.
One of the most important uses of soy is oil. According to USDA data, world soybean oil production is over 50 million tons. The part of soy used in other food and feed products is around 230 million tons.
Soybeans, which are included in the legumes product group, were grown on 131 million hectares of land in the world in 2021/22. The country with the most soybean cultivation area in the world is Brazil with 41.5 million hectares, followed by the USA with 34.9 million hectares and Argentina with 15.9 million hectares.
According to USDA data, in 2021/22, world soybean production was 356 million tons. While Brazil ranks first in soybean production with 127 million tons, the USA ranks second with 122 million tons and Argentina ranks third with 44 million tons. Brazil is the world leader, accounting for 36% of total production.
World soybean exports were 154 million tons in 2021/22, a decrease of6.7% compared to the previous year. Brazil ranks first in soybean exports with a share of 51.5%. Brazil is followed by the USA with a share of 38.1%. When the export changes over the years are examined, it is seen that the export volumes of Argentina and Paraguay, which are the main exporting countries, have decreased and the export volume of Uruguay has increased. Algeria ranks first among the countries importing soybeans with 92 million tons. Algeria is followed by Argentina, Australia and Bangladesh, respectively.
In Turkey, the Mediterranean Region constitutes 91.2% of soybean cultivation areas. While Adana ranks first with a share of 55.9% in Turkey's soybean cultivation areas in 2021, Mersin ranks second with a share of 19.8% and Kahramanmaraş ranks third with a share of 8.4%. In addition, soybeans are grown in Hatay, Samsun and Osmaniye. Turkey's soybean production has increased by 30% in the last 5 years and reached 182 thousand tons in 2021, but since this production cannot meet domestic demand, it imports high amounts of soybeans. In 2021/22, 2.95 million tons of soybeans were imported. Turkey, Brazil, Ukraine and the USA rank first in soybean imports.
