CORN
Corn, a plant from the grain family, is mainly used as animal feed. In addition, corn, which is used in the production of products such as flour, corn flakes, corn syrup, is generally suitable for growing in very humid climatic regions, and grows and develops on hot and sunny days of the year. Corn, which is considered to be of American origin, came to our country from Egypt in the 1600s under the name of ‘Egyptian Wheat’ and was shortened and named corn over time. It is grown mostly in the Eastern Black Sea region in Anatolia. They can grow up to 4 meters in length.
Corn production in the world is about 1.1 billion tons. The United States and China account for more than half of the world's corn production. These two countries are followed by Brazil with approximately 80 million tons of production. The EU countries, which ranked immediately after Brazil, reached approximately 65 million tons of corn production. The EU countries are followed by Ukraine (30 million tons), Argentina (25 million tons), India (24 million tons), Mexico (22 million tons), South Africa and Canada (14 million tons) and Russia (11 million tons), respectively. Turkey ranks 24th in corn production. The largest corn exporting country in the world is the USA.
While the USA is the country with the highest corn consumption with 302 million tons, China (216 million tons), Brazil (55 million tons), Mexico (31 million tons), India (19 million tons), Japan (15 million tons), Egypt (13 million tons) and Canada (12 million tons) are among the countries that consume the most corn.
While approximately 6 million tons of corn is produced in Turkey, 2.5 million tons of corn is imported. In our country, corn grown in Konya (19%), Adana (15%), Mardin (8%), Osmaniye (6%), Karaman (5%), Sakarya (5%), Manisa (5%), Şanlıurfa (4%), Diyarbakır (4%) and Kahramanmaraş (4%) provinces accounts for 75% of the total production.
