SUNFLOWER SEED
Sunflower, which is one of the most important oil plants in the world, is the oil plant with the most cultivation area and production in our country. The reasons such as the fact that the people generally prefer sunflower oil as vegetable oil and that it is the basic plant especially in the Thrace Region during planting (Wheat-Sunflower), have wide adaptability and are very suitable for mechanization make sunflower the most important oil plant for our country. High and quality oil can be obtained from the grains of the sunflower plant, which can be grown in almost every region. The share of sunflowers in world oil seed production is around 9% on average.
Ukraine (15 million tons) ranks first in lunar core production in the world, Russia (12 million tons) ranks second, and EU countries (9 million tons) ranks third. In Turkey, approximately 2 million tons of sunflowers are produced annually.
Among the oilseed plants cultivated in our country, sunflower takes the first place in terms of cultivation area and production. 50% of the vegetable oils produced in our country are also obtained from sunflower. Turkey produces more than 4% of the world's sunflower production, with an average of 36 million tons in the last decade, with an average of 1.5 million tons of sunflower production compared to the average of the last 10 years. Tekirdağ, Edirne, Kırklareli, Konya and Adana are the provinces with the most intensive production areas in our country.
Turkey's need for vegetable oil is increasing in parallel with the population growth and the increase in the rate of fat consumed per capita. This increase is observed at higher rates in Turkey compared to other countries. Turkey's annual oil consumption is around 1 million tons. About 10,000 tons of this comes from animal fats and the rest from vegetable fats. Among vegetable oils, the share of sunflower has the highest amount with an average of 600 thousand tons.
About half of the world's sunflower seed exports are carried out by EU countries and Ukraine. While our country ranks first in world sunflower seed imports, EU countries rank second.
